RAL Colors System : The Consistent Color in Powder Coating
The RAL Color System is an internationally recognized standard for color matching, widely used by designers, manufacturers, and powder coating professionals. Originating in Germany, it provides a precise and consistent way to communicate and specify colors across various industries. In this blog, we'll explore the origins of the RAL Color System, explain how it functions, and highlight its important role in the powder coating sector.
The History of the RAL Color System
The RAL Color System was established in Germany in the early 1920s, following the formation of the Reichs-Ausschuss für Lieferbedingungen und Gütesicherung (RAL), or the National Commission for Delivery Terms and Quality Assurance. Its main objective was to create a standardized color reference system that would improve color communication across various sectors.
In 1927, the RAL Color System quickly gained popularity for its accuracy and reliability, making it an essential tool in many industries. Over the years, it has evolved to not only serve as a color specification standard but also a crucial resource for color matching and identification. Today, professionals rely on RAL color swatches or digital tools to compare, match, and select the most accurate RAL color for any given project or customer request.
How the RAL Color System Works
The RAL Color System is built around a standardized collection of color samples, each assigned a distinct RAL code. These codes are made up of four digits, preceded by the letters "RAL" (e.g., RAL 9011). The first digit of the code represents the color family or group: 1 for yellow, 2 for orange, 3 for red, 4 for violet, 5 for blue, 6 for green, 7 for grey, 8 for brown, and 9 for shades of white and black. The remaining three digits are assigned sequentially to specific shades within that group.
There are 3 primary RAL color collections :
- RAL Classic is a color system that tends to be simpler and has a more traditional feel, focusing on solid colors.
- RAL Design is a more advanced and complex color system, aimed at providing a wider variety of shades with more detailed variations, as well as broader applications in graphic design and creative industries.
- RAL Effect is a more modern and intricate color collection, introducing special effects like metallic, pearlescent, and various textures. This system focuses on colors with unique visual effects.
